Carmella L. (Tosti) Ianzito

    Carmella Louise (Tosti) Ianzito, died on March 17, 2014, at Mayflower Place Nursing Center in Yarmouth, MA. She was privileged to have lived through most of the twentieth century and the beginnings of the twenty first under a series of 18 presidents. Born in 1912 when Fenway Park first opened, she was a lifelong Red Sox fan and was one of only a few who lived while her team won the World Series seven times. “Carmela” (she preferred spelling it with only one “L”) was loved by a large family, many friends and by numerous caretakers at Mayflower Place.
    The daughter of Umberto Tosti and Maria (Andreola) Tosti, Carmela was born and raised in Milford and lived there in her family home for 62 years before moving to Cape Cod in 2003. She was married for 40 years to Michael Ianzito who owned and operated Carmichael’s Pharmacy on Milford’s Main Street. Carmela worked at the pharmacy as the bookkeeper and was renowned for her speed at the typewriter, having won the typing award when a student at Milford High School. Prior to “Micky”s death in 1977, they shared a love of family, sports and traveling and she was proud to have visited all 50 states as the driver in a series of automobile trips.
     When younger, “Carm” was active in community activities as an officer and founding member of the Sacred Heart Woman’s Club, as President of the Old Gillon Spa Auxiliary and also as President of Carmichael’s Bowling League. And until her later years, she was an accomplished poker and blackjack player who enjoyed beating the odds at Foxwoods Casino.   Even as her health declined she enjoyed cards. She also retained a wonderful sense of humor and a warm personality that were appreciated by all who came to know her.
    Carmela is survived by one son, Dr. Benjamin M. Ianzito, and his wife, Maria, of Yarmouth Port. She is also survived by one brother, Mario Tosti, of Dennisport. Ten other siblings predeceased her over the years. She also leaves two granddaughters, Christina Ianzito of Washington, DC and Cynthia Conigliaro of Southboro, along with their spouses Dante Chinni and Greg Conigliaro, and four great grandchildren (Mia, Dante, Ava and Luca). She is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces who will always remember her as their “Auntie Lalla”. She also leaves many other relatives and many dear friends in Milford and on Cape Cod.
    Visiting hours at the Consigli-Ruggerio Funeral Home, 46 Water St., Milford, will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2014, from 8:30-9:30AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Milford, at 10AM. Burial will be at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery. A celebration of her life will take place this summer on Cape Cod for family and friends. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Mayflower Place for their compassionate and professional care during Carmela’s final years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Duffy Health Center, 94 Main Street, Hyannis MA 02601, a community agency providing care for the needy on Cape Cod.

We all have great memories of auntie lala growing up. many years of having her around, laughing, playing cards, cooking. Her many trips to Franklin when she would take Mama Tosti to visit us.
