Jose V. Vaz, 78, of New Bedford, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2025 at the St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. He was the husband of the late Esmeralda (Lopes) Vaz. He was born in Cervos, Portugal son the of the late Joao and Bernardina (Vilacha) Vaz and moved to Milford before moving to New Bedford in 1972. While in Portugal in served in the Portuguese Army. He was employed at the former Draper Corporation in Hopedale and was a labor in the local area for many years. He was a member of the New Bedford Portuguese Club.
He is survived by his children, Joe Vaz and Diane Lima both of New Bedford, four brothers, Anibal Vaz of New Bedford, Mario Vaz, Paul Vaz, and John Vaz all of Milford, three sisters, Maria Batista of Milford, Eugenia Fraga of Portugal, Maria Gloria Ribeiro of Foxborough, two grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Amandio Vaz.
Calling hours will be held Saturday, January 3, 2026 from 8:30 to 10:30 A.M. at the Consigli Ruggerio Funeral Home 46 Water St. A mass of Christian burial will follow at 11 A.M. at the St. Mary of the Assumption Church on Winter St. The burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
