David Leonard Melpignano ,70

David Leonard Melpignano, beloved father, son, brother, friend, coach, and teacher, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in Groton, MA on July 20, 2021. He was 70 years old. He leaves behind his adoring children, Sarah Melpignano Tsoi and her husband Sam, John Melpignano, and the light of his life, his grandson Caiden David Tsoi. David is the son of the late Joseph and Velia (Andreano) Melpignano, brother of Richard Melpignano of Enfield, CT and Ann Robichaud of Milford, MA, and longtime companion of Janice Mancuso Hurst of Milford, MA. David was married from 1977 to 2005 to Paula Roberts Melpignano of Schenectady, NY with whom he had their children, Sarah and John.

David grew up in Milford, MA, where he made lifelong friendships with his classmates. He went to Colby College where he graduated with a degree in English, then continued to the University of Bridgeport to receive a Master’s degree in Educational Media and Technology. He went on to Boston University for a Ph.D. in Educational Media and Technology and finished all but his dissertation before he began working in the field he loved, video. He started his own video production company in the early 80s which he ran successfully for more than 30 years, creating the first large stock footage library in the country. Throughout his life, he taught at universities and high schools all over the state including Bridgewater State College, Boston College, Boston University, Worcester State University, Franklin Pierce, and Groton Dunstable High School. He continued his teaching on the baseball field and coached at all levels of the game. Some of his best memories are from the year he took his American Legion team to the state tournament where they came in second place, having only lost that one game all season.

David leaves behind a legacy of storytelling, education, community engagement, creativity, a peculiar affinity for the bizarre and inappropriate, and an unapologetic disregard for all things authority. Described as ‘the man who has been 18-years old his entire life’ by his closest friends, David brought humor and adventure everywhere he went. As the self-professed Guardian of the Highways, he taught his children how to race cars home on a road trip, get a good “burn” going to get rid of the leaves, and how to elude the police while setting off fireworks. He was also never without some snack in his pockets just in case he got hungry. He taught his children, his students, and his players how to think critically and approach every situation like it was game day.

David was curious, mischievous, inquisitive, creative, and proud of his accomplishments. He was a lover of all storytelling, but mostly in the medium of film. David’s work in the film industry was not only his business but his passion. David’s creative intelligence was evident in how he spoke, produced his films, and in his unparalleled sense of humor. David’s charisma was unassuming and never failed to make others smile and more often make them laugh. His pride in his children was contagious - never shy about their accomplishments and their character, David would be the first to tell you how much he loved and adored them.

The love and admiration that David received throughout his life from his hundreds of lifelong friends, and former students and players is the greatest example of his impact and the legacy of fun and adventure he leaves behind him. He will be painfully missed and never forgotten by the people that were so blessed to have known him.

David will be having a private burial for his family on August 4 to be followed by a celebration of life at noon at the Hoboken Club at 252 Central St, Milford, MA. All are welcome to celebrate his incredible life. A second celebration will take place, details to follow.

Just heard of this sad event a year later today July 20th 2022. I saw a post on FB by his sister. A shock to me. I worked with David at Groton High School on a few videos for my French students and I. It was a lot of fun and we had planned to reconnect after I retired (June 2021) for a promo video for me eventually, but I didn’t even have a chance. I’m so saddened by this sudden passing. I had no idea. I just learned about it today. My condolences to his family. What a loss!
