James P Carty, of Mendon, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 21st after a stoic battle with cancer. Born in Boston on November 8th, 1942 to the late James and Agnes (McNulty) Carty of Dedham. Jim is the beloved husband of Mary (Fallon Norris) and devoted father to their children Danielle and husband Thomas Keane of Northbridge, Jeremiah Norris of Worcester, and Brigid Norris of Mendon. He also dearly loved his children Janet Sefakis and husband John of Burriville, Rhode Island, Mary Sherlock and husband Brian of Uxbridge, James Carty and partner Thelma McGuire of New Gloucester, Maine.
Jim was predeceased by his sister Dorothy Forrest, and also leaves his two sisters Jean Lifford and Barbara Fitzgerald. He will be deeply missed by his fourteen grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. His newest great grandchild was born just weeks before his death.
Jim attended Boston Latin High School before starting a lifelong career in fire protection. In 1980 he started his own company, Bristol Fire Protection, where he managed both the business and engineering side. The work of his company can be found in buildings from Providence to Boston, where he prided himself on a commitment to fire safety. He loved all aspects of business and worked until his soft retirement in recent years. He was involved in local government and committees, including the Zoning Board in Mendon, and was the secretary of the Boston Sprinkler Fitters Local 550 Union. When he wasn’t working, his passion was being on the water. As a child, Jim spent his summers along the Cape Cod Canal at his family’s treasured summer home. There he learned to navigate the coastal waters, and grew his love of sailing. In later years, he purchased his Bayfield, Saturday’s Child and spent summer trips between Newport and the Cape with his family. He and his wife Mary loved to dance, and could be found most Sundays at their favorite spot in Bristol, Rhode Island. They would enjoy traditional Irish music and could be counted on to dance for their friends. Jim found great happiness on Lake Squam NH, where he and Mary hosted an annual Fourth of July week for his grandchildren and their friends. The nearly two decade tradition would be a week spent on the lake, enjoying boating and their company. His grandchildren, Mara, whom her Papa referred to as “My Gal Sal”, Kellen, Declan, Ruairi , Jameson, Maeve will always have the memories from Camp Newman and their trips to New Hampshire.
